According to a recent report, the Chicago Bulls are expected to make major front-office changes this offseason.

Are you a Chicago Bulls fan? Have you been suffering from chronic apathy for the last three years? Do you long for the days of first-round playoff exits with rosters composed of players past their prime? If so, you may be suffering from GarPaxia, a serious but treatable condition affecting tens of thousands of Chicagoans every day.

If you or someone you know is affected, the good news is a cure may be in the works. According to a recent report from ESPN 1000’s David Kaplan, the Bulls are expected to make sweeping changes, including a plan to “overhaul everything in basketball operations.”

Candidly, I’ll believe it when I see it. This franchise has been meddling somewhere between mediocrity and irrelevant for years. For a brand that was as iconic as it came in the 1990s to being an afterthought in their own hometown, the fall from grace has been swift. Despite that precipitous drop, very little has changed where it matters — the front office.

The individuals who have been responsible for assembling the product on the floor each night, to include the head coach, have skated by. John Paxson and Gar Forman appear to be made of Teflon as blame for each disappointing season has failed to stick to them. While fans have been banging that drum for a while, ownership has not felt the same way and has stuck with the pair. Owner Jerry Reinsdorf has proven loyal to them both.

However, the team’s recent failings may be challenging Resindorf’s greatest loyalty — to the almighty dollar. You see, throughout these extremely lean years, fans have stuck with the team, supporting them with their dollars. The United Center has remained packed and fans tuned in at home. That is, until this season, where attendance and viewership appear to be down.

This is the only thing that should give fans hope that the most recent rumblings about major changes or a shakeup are in fact, true. The owner seems incapable of evaluating their performance objectively, but Bulls fans will gladly accept wholesale changes no matter their motivation. So at the conclusion of the season, fans will wait with bated breath to learn of those sweeping changes and hope it’s more than Paxson and Forman swapping roles — which would be quintessential Bulls.
