Chicago Blackhawks: Two goalies the team can trade at the deadline
The Chicago Blackhawks really took a risk when the signed Robin Lehner to a one year deal over the 2019 summer. They did it because of Corey Crawford’s recent injury history along with the fact that they didn’t really have a reliable backup. Lehner was also coming off of a season in which he was nominated for the Vezina Trophy. He has been brilliant for the Blackhawks so far this season.
Crawford has been good but Lehner has been great. He has a record of 12-7-4, a goals-against-average of 2.92, and a save percentage of .922. Those are elite numbers for the first year Blackhawk. If he is able to keep those numbers up for the rest of the season, he is going to earn himself an even nicer contract for 2020-21 and beyond.
The Blackhawks could look to do one of two things. The first would be to just sign Lehner to an extension. He is a good fit for the organization and has already become a fan favorite. One reason for that besides being elite is his mouth. He is one of the best quotes of any player that plays for a Chicago sports team. He says what he thinks to the media and people love him for it.
They could also decide to trade him. He is on an expiring contract and probably would prefer not to lose him for nothing. He would garner even more interest than Crawford would so they could probably get a decent return for him. If they did trade him it would be sad to see him go but getting a solid asset in return could make it worth it. Both of these goalies have been good for the team but if they’re not going to be here next year you might as well get something for them.
