Despite a disappointing offseason thus far, there’s plenty for Chicago Cubs fans to be excited about for 2020.

It’s officially January, which means that there will be Chicago Cubs baseball played next month.

For the third straight offseason, the Cubs front office has been rather quiet. The team essentially has the same roster as they did at the beginning of the 2018 season, despite back to back Septembers ending in disappointing fashion.

There hasn’t been a division series game played at Wrigley Field since 2017,  while the oft-discussed championship window is all but shut.

Some may even argue that the Cubs have already missed their opportunity for a second championship.

It feels like Groundhog Day on the North Side, with the front office yelling “poor” and trade rumors swirling with no outcome.

It needs to be a busy January if the Cubs hope to compete next season.

Unfortunately, a majority of the most valuable free agents are already snatched up, meaning that the Cubs may have to look towards trades rather than free agency to improve.

They’ll also need to shed some payroll if the club does indeed intend to get below the luxury tax threshold as they’ve mentioned.

The team owed $7.6 million in luxury tax penalties for the 2019 season. They were one of only three teams that owed money for the past season in addition to the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees.

Despite a disappointing offseason thus far, there are still many things for Cubs fans to be excited about in the upcoming season.
