Chicago Bears: 6 non-playoff quarterbacks to trade for
By Ryan Heckman
Gardner Minshew, Jacksonville Jaguars
Lastly, we have a guy who took the league by surprise early on in the 2019 season. The Jacksonville Jaguars had a rough start to the year after losing starting quarterback Nick Foles, and the season never seemed to truly turn around.
But, backup quarterback and rookie sixth-round pick Gardner Minshew did come in and play well. For a late draft pick who was thrust into a tough situation right away in his NFL career, Minshew exceeded any expectations he may have had placed upon him.
There were games where Minshew made several elite-level throws, dropping passes right where they needed to be for his receivers. He was a big reason why young wideout D.J. Chark enjoyed a breakout year.
Minshew ended his rookie season with a 6-6 record, starting 12 of 14 games. He was replaced with Foles once healthy, but Minshew quickly took the field again in place of Foles. In total. Minshew threw for 3,271 yards with 21 touchdowns and just six interceptions.
The Jaguars have an intriguing situation on hand, because they owe Foles a whole heck of a lot of money. If a team was to offer them a mid-round pick for Minshew, would they bite?
If Minshew came to Chicago by chance, he would likely come in as a backup to begin with. But, if he showed out during training camp, the pressure would certainly be on Trubisky — and maybe, just maybe, Minshew takes the field at some point during 2020 if Trubisky struggles.
