Chicago Bears: 6 non-playoff quarterbacks to trade for
By Ryan Heckman
Alex Smith, Washington Redskins
The first guy I could see the Bears trading for (and probably the most likely of them all) is Alex Smith. Now, Smith comes with one gigantic caveat — he has to be cleared medically. At the moment, he’s not quite back to playing football yet.
But, let’s just say that Smith ends up back on the practice field and looking ready to play again. He’s no spring chicken, but Smith is the perfect guy to come into a situation like the Bears. The roster is ready to win a Super Bowl, outside of a couple holes to fill. The big question is at quarterback — that’s it.
Smith has previously worked with Matt Nagy when they were both members of the Kansas City Chiefs. Nagy helped Smith engineer his career-best season a couple of years ago. In 2017, Smith was named to his third Pro Bowl after tossing 26 touchdowns and throwing for over 4,000 yards.
Should Smith get healthy, the Bears could probably land him for a conditional late-round pick. With Ron Rivera coming in and Dwayne Haskins being the immediate future (barring Washington pulling a Kliff Kingsbury/Kyler Murray move), I would think Smith is expendable if healthy.
