The Chicago Blackhawks needed a big comeback against a much worse Red Wings team than them and the kids led the way to a big win.

The Chicago Blackhawks started a very important homestand on Sunday night against a struggling Detroit Red Wings. Detroit came into the match with only ten wins and sat in 31st place out of 31 in the overall NHL standings. The Hawks knew that they would have to work to match the intensity of the Red Wings to win. Just because a team is low doesn’t mean they are as bad as they appear. Detroit is not good, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have skilled players who can burn you for not playing the right way.

The Red Wings proved that early. They jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period. They ended up taking that lead into the first intermission. The Blackhawks needed to ramp up their intensity in order to get it tied and potentially win. They got it tied with a pair of goals from the two Dylans. Dylan Strome scored the first one followed by Dylan Sikura‘s first NHL goal. Sikura has been snakebitten when playing in the NHL but he finally scored. Hopefully, the monkey is off his back and he can start scoring with some regularity.

It was good to see some youngsters get the Hawks going on the scoreboard in the second period. It wouldn’t stop there as rookie defenseman Adam Boqvist scored the go-ahead goal for Chicago in the third period. That goal would hold up as the game-winner for Chicago. Dominik Kubalik went on to add an empty-net goal to ice the win. It was a strong showing by four young players to get the Hawks a much-needed win.

It is always nice when the players that you’ve counted on for a decade step up and lead a win. That would be Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews in the case of the Chicago Blackhawks. That was sort of in effect as they each chipped in an assist. Neither of them scored but they did contribute. They didn’t completely lead the win but it is also nice to have some young depth lead the way as well. That happened in this game with some of the younger players scoring big goals. This team needs its youth to continue to develop and that flashed some brilliance in this game.

The Blackhawks homestand continues on Tuesday night when the Calgary Flames come to town. The Flames are a team looking to show some consistency. It has been an up and down season for them so it is hard to predict which version of the team will be at the United Center in this one. The Blackhawks are going to need to have that same level of intensity in that game as they showed in the second and third period of this game against Detroit.
