Chicago Bears: Kellen Moore should be the next offensive coordinator
The Chicago Bears need an offensive coordinator and a terrific option might have become available.
After firing Mark Helfrich, the Chicago Bears are without an offensive coordinator. There have been rumors floating around social media that the team is considering going into next season without one. This is not an unprecedented move, as a few other teams in the league do this — most notably the Los Angeles Rams. Since Matt Nagy already calls all the plays, it would seem like a logical move.
However, if the team does decide to hire a coordinator, Kellen Moore of the Dallas Cowboys should be their selection. The Cowboys recently fired Jason Garrett and reports are they have hired, Mike McCarthy. There is no word yet, as to whether he will want to retain Moore as offensive coordinator or even if Moore wants to stay.
If the answer to either of those questions is ‘no,’ then the Bears should inquire into whether he’d be interested in coming to Chicago.
For the sake of argument, let’s say the Bears are indeed committed to Mitchell Trubisky next season as they indicated in their press conference. If so, then they have to do everything in their power to fix the issues that have plagued him so far in his career.
What better way than to bring in the guy who had a hand in helping Dak Prescott have the best season of his career and the team have a prolific offense. They were first in total yards per game (431.5), second in passing yards per game (296.9), and fifth in rushing yards per game (134.6).
Now yes, he did have a solid offensive line and Ezekiel Elliot, so detractors will say offensive success was inevitable. However, Moore showed that he is committed to the run as an offensive play-caller, something the Bears will look to do next season.
This year, the Cowboys rushed the ball 449 times, good for eighth in the league. No doubt, there are Bears fans who would love to see that kind of commitment to the run game — and with Mitch’s deficiencies, they will need to do just that and take as much pressure and responsibility off of Mitch as possible.
Beyond his commitment to the run game, and results on the field, Moore is largely viewed as one of the more creative up and coming young offensive coordinators in the league, which would seem to fit into Nagy’s philosophy. As a former quarterback, he could be another voice to connect with Mitch and help fix his footwork and improve his ability to read defenses.
In short, there are a lot of reasons the Bears should hire Moore as their next offensive coordinator, but there is only one that matters — does Nagy want one?
