Chicago Bears: 3 reasons Pat Shurmur should be next OC
By Ryan Heckman
After the Chicago Bears let go of a few assistant coaches this past week, the offensive coordinator opening seems like a no-brainer.
Going into the New Year, we assumed general manager Ryan Pace was ready to make some changes. What changes would be made first, though, was the real question.
This past week, the Bears parted ways with four coaches: Offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich, offensive line coach Harry Hiestand, tight ends coach Kevin Gilbride and special teams assistant Brock Olivo.
The Bears’ offense was abysmal in 2019, therefore it makes sense to let go of a few names responsible for that side of the ball. A couple of questions still remain, however.
Why wasn’t quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone fired? If Helfrich and Hiestand go, it only seems logical for Ragone to be let go as well. Second, who will Matt Nagy bring in as his new offensive coordinator, and will he continue to call plays?
The latter may be the real issue at hand, to go along with the struggles of Mitchell Trubisky who will be entering his fourth season in the NFL.
There are a lot of names being thrown around for the Bears’ opening at offensive coordinator, and it’s going to be an important hire for Pace and the future of his tenure with the team. A couple of guys who have been talked about amongst fans are Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks coach Mike Kafka and former New York Giants head coach Pat Shurmur.
Kakfa is a strong candidate to step up as the Chiefs offensive coordinator should they lose their current coordinator, Eric Bieniemy. Regardless, Shurmur should be atop the list for both Pace and the fans. Why? It makes too much sense.
