Chicago Bears: Theories on why Dave Ragone wasn’t fired
By Ryan Fedrau
3. Dave Ragone’s future will be determined by the next offensive coordinator
Along with hiring an offensive coordinator, the team will have to find a new offensive line coach, a tight ends coach, and a special teams coach. When searching for an offensive coordinator, the person chosen might want to bring in a quarterback coach of his own. That isn’t uncommon in a situation like this.
The benefit of either firing Ragone or not promoting him adds a change of scenery to the offense. When Pace and Nagy find their next coordinator, it needs to be someone who can help the progression of Trubisky. He also needs to be the new play-caller. If Nagy continues to call plays in 2020, there might not be a playoff run.
There haven’t been any people named for an interview for the job. Ragone might still be there just in case they choose him for the job. I could see him getting the job or him getting fired. The only reason to keep him at all is his connection with Trubisky.
Whether or not the team chooses the right coaches to come in and fix this mess, the free-agent market is just as important. The team, with the money they have to spend, needs to add depth to the offensive line and fix the tight end position. In the draft, they need to look for a power back type running back to help David Montgomery.
There are many holes offensively for this team, I continue to believe Trubisky isn’t one of them. 2020 will be his last chance though. If he doesn’t come out of his shell for the majority of the season, he might be getting a new job in 2021.
Even if he leaves Chicago, I could see him finding success somewhere else. With Trubisky, they did rush his progression. That falls on the old staff though, not Coach Nagy. The next few months will be telling for the team’s future.
