1. Dave Ragone creates stability for Mitchell Trubisky

Dave Ragone was the quarterback coach when Mitchell Trubisky was drafted in 2017. The first coach Trubisky had was John Fox (pictured), who wasn’t quarterback friendly. I don’t mean that in a bad way, Coach Fox is a great coach. He just isn’t a great offensive coach.

When a team has a defensive-minded head coach, the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach have more responsibilities. The quarterback coach plays a bigger role in a defensive-minded head coach’s system than an offensive-minded head coach’s system.

Ragone has a lot of trust and confidence in Trubisky. Trubisky has the same trust and confidence in him. When a quarterback first comes into the league, chances are, they’ll fall into a system like Trubisky’s. A young quarterback normally will go through multiple head coaches and offensive coordinators. The quarterback coach is the only constant in a young quarterback’s career.

Firing Ragone gets rid of that safety blanket for Trubisky. That also could create an unstable environment for Trubisky if Matt Nagy were to be fired in 2020. Having Ragone around for another year can help benefit the growth of Trubisky. If any coach knows Trubisky best, it is Ragone.

If I were Nagy, I would be more keen on listening to what Ragone has to say. Since Ragone has been working with Trubisky the longest, there needs to be more of a connection between the three. I believe there was some trust broken between Nagy and Trubisky in 2019. With Ragone still being there, that can help rebuild that relationship.

From the outside looking in, it looks like Nagy doesn’t trust Trubisky. In 2020, they have to fix that. If they can’t fix their situation by the end of next season, one of them will be gone, maybe even both.

So whether it’s the right choice or not, Ragone is here as of right now for 2020. If he knows Trubisky as well as he says he does, they should be working on his footwork as soon as he is healthy again. There is still time to help mold Trubisky into the best version of himself. Like I have said in many other articles, Trubisky is a project that has a solid upside. We have all seen that throughout his career.
