Chicago Bears: Early 2020 NFL Draft prospects to keep an eye on
By Usayd Koshul
4. Curtis Weaver, Edge, Boise State
Some may not view edge rusher as being a need since the Bears are set with Khalil Mack and Leonard Floyd going into 2020, adding another edge rusher is something the Bears need to at least explore for two big reasons. First, in the NFL, you can never have too many pass rushers and second, the Bears don’t have any quality depth behind Floyd. While veteran Aaron Lynch has provided some good play over the last two years, he’s been inconsistent in 2019 and has drawn multiple penalities.
Curtis Weaver is an interesting prospect because he has an excellent first step and a high motor. Those are two qualities that should allow him to be a guy who will thrive at the next level either as a defensive lineman or an outside linebacker. In three years at Boise State, Weaver had 47.5 tackles for loss and 34 sacks. The production has definitely been there now he just he needs to be more consistent.
In the worst-case scenario, Weaver will likely end up being a rotational edge rusher for some team in the NFL. While Floyd will likely be the starter in 2020, if Weaver develops correctly, he could take over in 2021 as a full-time starter.
