The Chicago Bears will likely pick up Mitch Trubisky’s fifth-year option this off-season. By default, that would place Trubisky among the favorites to be the 2020 starting quarterback.

Chicago Bears’ fans likely will not want to hear this, but Mitch Trubisky is still among the favorites to be the team’s starting quarterback in 2020.

The Bears will undoubtedly pick up Trubisky’s fifth-year option this off-season as general manager Ryan Pace clings on to the sliver of hope that his 2017 second overall selection can be salvaged.

Trubisky’s 2019 struggles have been no secret to anyone that has watched the Bears’ play this season.  Trubisky’s quarterback rating of 82.9 percent is 9 percent lower than the league average this season. Furthermore, Trubisky’s average of 5.9 yards per pass attempt this season has also led to many missed scoring opportunities.

So, why then, is Trubisky among the likely options to be the Bears’ starting quarterback in 2020?

Simply put, it is the easy choice. Considering the scarce draft picks that the Bears have in 2020 and limited financial flexibility, the Bears may decide to address other areas of need instead of the quarterback position this off-season. Those areas of need include tight end, offensive line, running back, and linebacker.

The case for Trubisky is if Pace and head coach Matt Nagy decide to design the offense around the strengths of the Bears’ starting quarterback. An offense that emphasizes Trubisky’s ability to thrive with a moving pocket. Designing an offense around the quarterback you have is what lead to Lamar Jackson‘s emergence for the Baltimore Ravens this season.

If that is the case, Pace may opt to ride it out with Trubisky. A decision that will likely be Pace’s unwinding if it backfires.
