Disappointment #2: Head Coach Matt Nagy

It’s one of the biggest questions about this disappointing Bears season: Is Trubisky or coach Matt Nagy more responsible for this team’s offensive struggles? It’s a close race, and the second-year coach might have taken the lead after Sunday.

As this season progressed, there were questions about Bears playcalling on offense and whether or not Trubisky and Nagy were a good fit. After a great first season in which the Bears went 12-4, there’s been some alarming regression.

Nagy was the 2018 NFL Coach of the Year, but now it seems as if he doesn’t trust his own quarterback. The guy that Nagy and GM Ryan Pace once endlessly praised now seems to be in the coach’s way.

It was evident on Sunday night as Nagy called screen passes on multiple third and long situations. He may trust his creative playcalling or the team’s blocking, but that is not a recipe for success.

The coach was once touted as an offensive genius who learned under Chiefs coach Andy Reid. But, the student still had a lot to learn after Sunday’s embarrassing loss.

In my opinion, the biggest key for the Bears to improve next season is for Nagy to bounce back and make his offense work again. He needs to either start trusting Trubisky, or advocate for the team to bring in another quarterback.

If Nagy doesn’t step up next season, I feel he should be on the hot seat. It may seem premature, but it’s clear the offense took a huge step backward this season. There’s still time to fix this, but Nagy needs to go back to the drawing board during this long offseason.
