Jonathan Taylor, Running Back, Wisconsin

It truly is a shame that the best running back in the country wasn’t invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony as a finalist this year. Jonathan Taylor amassed 2,118 yards from scrimmage this year for the Wisconsin Badgers while scoring a total of 26 touchdowns.

In Taylor’s three seasons with Wisconsin, he totaled 6,444 yards from scrimmage and 55 touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per tote on the ground. The short scouting report on Taylor is this: He’s an electric back with vision who rarely goes down on first contact and, when he gets to the second level, Taylor can take it to the house on any given play.

“But, the Bears drafted a running back with their first draft pick in 2018 — and they traded up to get David Montgomery, nonetheless. Why waste another early draft pick on the running back position two years in a row?”

I get it. The argument to draft need over talent is a great argument, but it’s not the right one. If you’re Ryan Pace, you absolutely must take the best available player when you’re on the board this year. If Taylor is sitting there with one of your second round picks, you take him — period.

Trade Tarik Cohen. Run with Montgomery and Taylor as a dynamic 1-2 punch. The offensive line needs help, sure. But, you take the talent when it’s there. The Bears could have one of the most talented, young back fields in football if this were to happen.

Taylor is good enough to be a first round pick, but at the moment, he’s being mocked in the second round all over the place. This is a can’t-miss prospect we’re talking about, and the Bears could have him in the second round. That’s a no-brainer.
