Mitchell Trubisky and Matt Nagy have been destroyed by the media after a rough start to the 2019 Chicago Bears season. It’s certain they’ll be back in 2020, what can we expect?

Chicago Bears‘ quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and head coach Matt Nagy have been rocky all season long. Even during this four-game winning streak, they’ve both had their moments. Whether you’re pro-Trubisky, pro-Nagy, or neither, they’ll both be back in 2020.

Let’s break down the season for both of them so far. With three games left in the season, Trubisky is 7-5 as a starter. He has thrown 16 touchdowns to eight interceptions. He has 2,440 passing yards and shocking 143 rushing yards. He has two rushing touchdowns to add to his totals. Overall, that’s 18 touchdowns and a total of 2,583 yards.

Trubisky has had his wide receivers disappoint him this season. The Bears lead the league in dropped passes. The offensive line, for the most part, has been abysmal. Either they’re taking holding penalties or letting Trubisky get sacked. They’ve gotten better during the last few games. That is a sign of improvement.

Coach Nagy is a different story. He calls the plays and singled out the rushing game for half the season. He didn’t let David Montgomery go beast-mode until the end of October. He has wasted talent by not running the ball. For some reason, he believes Tarik Cohen is an every-down running back. Spoiler, Cohen isn’t. Cohen is a fast, human joystick who can catch the ball out of the backfield. That is what he is good for. Cohen isn’t a full-time running back.

His play calling is bad. That’s putting it lightly. Somehow, in the third quarter, he is a better play-caller than Josh McDaniels. The other three-quarters he looks like he doesn’t know football. With all the talent this team has, either they’re over-hyped or Nagy is trying to lose some of these games. What this team does in the third quarter makes fans wonder what is going on. I still have no answer.

In 2020, here’s what Ryan Pace needs to do. There needs to be a new offensive coordinator. That new coordinator has to be a proven play-caller. Nagy shouldn’t be calling plays in 2020. Mark Helfrich isn’t the guy, sorry to break it to everyone. Pace should also bring in a new quarterback coach. My personal pick would be Larry Fedora. Fedora was Trubisky’s coach in college. He knows Trubisky better than any other coach coming into Chicago would.

In 2020, Cordarrelle Patterson returns punts instead of Cohen. The team also should move him to tight end. Trey Burton can’t stay healthy, they need to move on from him. Patterson would be a great second tight end.

J.P. Holtz might be ready to take the starting rule at tight end. The Bears need to draft a tight end who Trubisky likes since Trubisky will be the one throwing to him.

The team needs to re-sign key role players and fill up some holes. They need to add depth to both the offensive and defensive lines. They need to draft another running back to be the third back. I would move Ben Braunecker to fullback to give room for the drafted tight end.

The Bears need to add another wide receiver to their roster. They’re missing a big guy to go up and get the jump balls. That needs to be a top priority for the off-season. There is no reason to spend a bunch of money for a guy, they just need a guy that will fit the system. They also need to use him, unlike how they treated Mike Davis.

For pre-season, the starters need to play. Trubisky started off way too shaky this season. They need to give him reps in pre-season. Trubisky needs to build confidence from the start and get going. Week 1 might be another game against the Green Bay Packers. They need Trubisky to be more prepared than he was in the last two seasons.

Since the Bears won’t win the NFC North, they’ll have an easier schedule. They need to take advantage of that. This season they had one of the toughest schedules in football. They obviously weren’t ready for that.

The schedules aren’t out yet, so I can’t give a full prediction. If the Bears can start off better than they did in 2019, they’ll be a playoff team. That all comes down to who is calling plays and how they use Trubisky. In the last few weeks, they’ve used Trubisky’s strengths and he’s played amazing. They have to make that a consistent thing in 2020 if they want to make the playoffs.
