Bears: Some fans owe Khalil Mack an apology
Some Chicago Bears fans likely owe Khalil Mack an apology after his latest act of generosity.
Back in October, Chicago Bears outside linebacker Khalil Mack was caught up in the dumpster fire that is “outrage Twitter.” You know who those people are — they’re the ones who look for things to be offended or outraged about. These individuals seem to make it their mission to feign outrage and stir the proverbial social media pot for clicks and clout.
One good and recent example of this is the video posted of Mack’s house on Halloween. A social media “outlet” posted a video of a private security guard standing outside of Mack’s house informing trick or treaters that the house was not giving out candy.
Despite not having any information as to why Mack might have done that (perhaps he wasn’t home and didn’t want people randomly walking up to his house — a reasonable ask for a pro-athlete) the video was posted with a clear intent to spark outrage.
Well, it worked as “fans” and others took to the comments to blast Mack. Some compared him to Scrooge, while others speculated that his wealth went to his head. Still, others used much more colorful language that we’re not allowed to reprint here, but suffice it to say, they were mad.
Again, digging in on a position and being incensed over something you know nothing about and are not impacted by is the height of outrage Twitter.
I’m curious whether those people apologized to Khalil Mack today when it was announced that he paid off $80,000 worth of layaway accounts at a Wal-Mart in Fort Pierce, Florida, his hometown. Mack did not ask for recognition, or to be named, but his foundation paid off approximately 350 accounts. That’s 350 people who will be positively impacted this holiday season through his generosity.
For the people impacted, Mack’s generous act likely brightened their day more than any of us will know. Perhaps it allowed a parent to make their child’s Christmas special or helped someone pay off a much-needed appliance.
Regardless, I can say with certainty that it was an incredibly kind and selfless gesture. I can also say with confidence that it had a greater impact than any piece of Halloween candy could have. So to everyone who railed against Mack on Halloween, I hope you recognize his generosity with the same level of enthusiasm.
