Ranking each Chicago sports franchise’s best team of the past decade
By Ryan Fedrau
5. 2010 Chicago White Sox (88-74)
The 2010 Chicago White Sox was the last White Sox team to win 88-games. Even though they didn’t make the playoffs, it was the closest they got since 2008. White Sox fans have been desperately waiting to see playoff baseball again. In 2005, they won their first World Series since 1917. Since then, they’ve been a mediocre baseball team at best.
The White Sox were led by Paul Konerko, who was the only White Sox player to have a batting average over .300. Young pitcher John Danks led the team in wins with a 15-11 record as a starter. He had one complete game where he had a shutout.
The White Sox started off the first half of the season 49-38. They looked destined for a playoff run. After falling off a bit and winning only 39 of their last 72 games, they missed the playoffs.
Chicago was one game shy of the wildcard, six behind winning their division. They were in first place for 27 days, their last day being in first place of the AL Central division was August 11th, 2010.
Since 2010, the White Sox have been rebuilding for the future. They have a young star in Tim Anderson. Their oldest player is only 30 years old. The team is really young and they have some pieces in place to do big things in the next decade. It’s a long road ahead for the White Sox but their fans have to trust the process.
There are still going to be a bunch of growing pains going into 2020. They have been very active so far in the offseason. They signed Yasmani Grandal, while also re-signing key players from last year’s team. They’re still active as looking for more talent in their system.
They are one or two defensive players away from being a competitive team. Going into the next decade, hopes should be high for this team. They will be a playoff team within the next three seasons if they play their cards right.
