Jeff Van Gundy

If the Bulls wanted to find a replacement for Jim Boylen who could potentially be a head coach going forward and could take over now, they could try convincing Jeff Van Gundy to leave his broadcasting gig and come back to the NBA.

Van Gundy was a highly successful coach in the late 1990s and early 2000s. He has not coached since 2007, but he has a regular-season winning percentage of .575. Van Gundy achieved these records while coaching the New York Knicks (1996-2001) and the Houston Rockets (2003-2007). Hard to imagine a time when the Knicks were a solid NBA team. The same could be said about the Bulls.

Van Gundy was not as successful in the postseason and could be why he has yet to find a new coaching gig. In the playoffs, Van Gundy is .500 with a 44-44 record. Van Gundy might struggle with the modern NBA as things have changed since his last coaching gig. That said, he has not been far from the game and is an excellent strategist. Personally, I think he’d be fine.

While in New York, Van Gundy went 248-172 with two Eastern Conference finals visits and one NBA finals appearance. During his stint in Houston, Van Gundy had two 50-win seasons. He is known for his defensive prowess and ability to motivate players. This sounds similar to Jim Boylen outside of the ability to motivate players.

Van Gundy would be a fantastic replacement for Jim Boylen, however, maybe the team would prefer another option who has not been removed from the game for as long?
