For the first time in a long time, the Chicago Bears won because of Mitchell Trubisky.

It has been a while since the Chicago Bears could point to Mitchell Trubisky as the reason it won a football game, but that’s exactly what happened on Thursday.

At times it wasn’t pretty, and there were plenty of moments that left you scratching your head or wanting to pull your hair out of it.

There was a multitude of penalties that wiped out big gains, and what seemed like a record number of offsides by the Bears. There was even a play where the Bears only had 10 players on the field — and that was coming out of a timeout.

Of course, there was also a play where Anthony Miller lined up on the wrong side of the line and a delay of game after a questionable catch by Miller on the sidelines. While it ultimately looked like it would have remained a catch, Trubisky looked like he wanted to snap the ball quickly to prevent a challenge, but Matt Nagy switched personnel and the offense couldn’t snap the ball in time.

Despite all of that, and getting carved up by a third-string rookie quarterback in the first half, the Bears found a way to pull out the win late.

And the reason they pulled it out wasn’t the defense bailing out the offense with a pick-six, or a special teams touchdown. Heck, it wasn’t even a fluke offensive touchdown.

Rather, the game was one because of and not in spite of Mitch Trubisky. That’s a huge distinction and one that is critically important for the team going forward as it has not been the case that Mitch has led the team to victory. Usually, it’s more a case of him not doing anything to lose the game.

But this win was squarely on Mitch’s shoulders. He stepped up when his team needed him most and delivered in the clutch. Late in the fourth quarter, Trubisky led the team on a 90-yard drive which included two dimes to Miller, both on third down, for 35 and 32 yards respectively.

The drive culminated in the eventual game-winning touchdown as the defense held on. Trubisky has fallen on a bit of hard luck in late-game situations when he’s put the team in a position to win but a missed field goal or defensive miscues failed to seal the deal. It was good to finally see him get one under his belt, for as hard as he works, he certainly deserved it.
