Bulls: Coby White breaks one record and ties another
Coby White was on fire Tuesday night against the New York Knicks. He set a Chicago Bulls’ franchise record for most threes in a quarter and tied the franchise record for most threes in a half.
The Chicago Bulls played the New York Knicks on Tuesday. The Bulls let up an 18-point lead to lose at Madison Square Garden the last time these two teams played each other. Bobby Portis had a revenge game by scoring 30 points in 28 minutes. This time, the Bulls took care of business.
We have to preface this with the fact that the Knicks are not a good basketball team. For all of you Bulls fans struggling to cheer on this franchise, imagine being a Knicks fan. At least this team has players you can get behind and root for this season. The Bulls are a young team and their arrow is pointing upwards despite not having a true superstar.
Is it possible the team has a superstar in the making though? Could Coby White be the next great Bull to come from North Carolina? I am pretty sure I heard a few MVP chants coming from the United Center tonight. Now, before we get ahead of ourselves, White is not even close to being that good yet. He has been very inconsistent this season, but remember he is a rookie.
Not only that, he is a rookie coming off the bench. Could he earn sixth-man of the year honors though? I would not put that out of the realm of possibilities, but we are only a handful of games into the season.
The game tonight though was exciting. Heading into the fourth quarter, the Bulls and Knicks were actually tied. This is when the Coby White show started. White scored seven, yes I said seven, threes in one quarter. This is a Bulls franchise record. Not to mention, this number also ties the franchise record for most three-pointers in a half. White did that though in just one quarter alone.
Coby White’s greatness on the night does not stop there. Well, maybe this is less a testament to how great White was and more about how bad the Knicks team played. White finished the game with 27 points. The Knicks bench combined for only 22 points. Yep, White outscored the entire Knicks bench.
What might be more impressive, is that White played 27 minutes in this game. The Knicks bench combined for 84 minutes. For those of you not good at math, that is a 57-minute difference. No wonder Coby heard a few MVP chants. Those might be a stretch, but he definitely deserved the Coby chants he heard throughout the stadium.
I am excited about White’s potential. He was the guy I wanted the Bulls to draft at pick number seven and thought he had the potential to be the third-best player in coming into the league this season. If White can continue to play like this, he might end up being the best. No matter what happens, all I know is that he is very fun to watch. This should make for an interesting season.
