Chicago Blackhawks: Comparing Robin Lehner and Corey Crawford
Goaltender Corey Crawford
At the start of the season, it looked like Corey Crawford was just not going to be himself this season. He battled concussions for the last two years, and many Blackhawks fans thought it’d be a good time to retire. He’s a two-time Stanley cup champion and did not have much left to prove on the ice. So at 34 years old, it seemed like a perfect time to retire.
But there was no announcement that he’d be retiring, so the ‘Hawks went into the season with him on the roster. Colliton never announced who the number one goalie or backup would be. He just let things play out and evaluated Crawford once he put him between the pipes.
However, he struggled mightily his first two starts of the year, allowing nine goals in those two games.
Stats this year for Crawford
- 8 games (8 starts)
- 2-4-2 record
- 3.27 GAA, and .934 save percentage
Crawford isn’t necessarily what he use to be, but he can still be serviceable and win games for the Blackhawks. While he may no longer be considered an elite goaltender, he can still step in and contribute in a reserve role. He’s probably not up to the task of starting every game, but can certainly fill a valuable role on this team.
So far this year, the Blackhawks have possibly one of the best duos in the national hockey league — one that is both talented and experienced.
