Bears: Assessing needs to address in 2020 offseason
By Usayd Koshul
8. Safety
The Bears will have some decisions to make at the safety position in 2020. Eddie Jackson‘s contract expires after 2020 meaning he’s due for an extension. Meanwhile, Deon Bush, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, DeAndre Houston-Carson are all in contract years as well.
While Jackson is next in line for a massive extension, Bush is likely to return as well unless Ha Ha Clinton-Dix signs a cheap, long-term deal that won’t break the bank. Houston-Carson, who’s only made an impact on special teams seems as if he’s likely gone after 2019.
While the free-agent safety market will change between now and March, there’s nobody that seems as if they’ll interest the Bears. In other words, look for the Bears to use draft capital on a safety.
One unique route that the Bears could end up going is by letting Clinton-Dix go but signing Bush to a long-term deal. Considering Bush has mainly been a backup his entire career, the Bears could walk into a situation where Bush signs a team-friendly deal but then ends up outplaying his contract.
One name that the Bears need to strongly keep an eye on would be California Safety Ashtyn Davis, who’s a disciplined safety that uses his eyes and instincts to make plays. Davis fits into the Bears defense in the sense that he also brings a high level of versatility as well. He’s a guy who can play in the slot or line up on the line of scrimmage and possibly blitz.
The reality of the safety position for the Bears right now is that it is set to undergo a slight makeover in 2020 but there are names on the roster that are set to return which is excellent continuity for the Bears on defense.
