Bulls: What would you say Jim Boylen does around here?

At this point, it’s more than fair to ask what exactly Jim Boylen does for the Chicago Bulls.

If you looked through the Chicago Bulls media guide, you’d notice it lists the head coach as none other than Jim Boylen. Being listed as the man in charge presumes that he performs all the tasks associated with the position.

For example, beyond the x’s and o’s, you’d expect the head coach to, at a fundamental level, teach, train, develop, and motivate his or her players. This is even more important for a young team like the Bulls that are in year ‘infinity’ of its rebuild but hoping to break out any decade now.

And the front office of John Paxson and Gar Forman had high hopes that its fourth coach in the last ten years would be the one! I mean, the law of averages eventually has to come out in your favor right?

Well, things haven’t worked out so far this year. The excuse that Boylen doesn’t have all of his players healthy at the same time, is inapplicable this year. And despite having a full offseason with all of his players, and an incredibly easy schedule to start the season, the team has laid an egg thus far.

However, the most puzzling part of it all is Boylen’s explanation for why the team has, quite frankly, stunk this year.

Boylen, who as usual had no issues hurling his own players under the bus, cited the team’s lack of preparedness. But curiously Boylen argued it’s the players who needed to take more responsibility for being prepared. It was the players who needed to take “ownership” of their readiness to play. If you ask Jim, the players need to give greater effort.

Aside from his brass cajones in continuing to lay the blame at the feet of his players, rather than take any responsibility himself, what’s shocking is that his job is to motivate, prepare, and hold players accountable if they’re not taking “ownership” of their own “readiness to play.”

So if the team is failing at all of those things according to Boylen, I think it’s fair to ask, “what is it that you say ya do around here Jim?”
