Blackhawks wisely send Brendan Perlini to the Red Wings

The Chicago Blackhawks have made a trade. They sent Brendan Perlini to the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for defenseman Alec Regula. Perlini just signed a one-year contract extension with the Blackhawks right before the season started but things weren’t going his way for him so far this year. He is only 23 years old so there is still some room for improvement but something wasn’t right as he only appeared in one game so far this season.
In the one game he was given, he didn’t collect any points and only had 7:49 of ice time. Perlini came to Chicago in the trade that also got them Dylan Strome and sent Nick Schmaltz to the Arizona Coyotes. For whatever reason his time in Chicago was short and there wasn’t any room for him in the lineup as far as the coaching staff was concerned. Players like Alexander Nylander, Kirby Dach, and Ryan Carpenter played their way into the lineup over him and now he is gone.
He will be a member of the Detroit Red Wings, who are in the middle of a rebuild but he will definitely see a lot of playing time there and there will be lots of other young skilled players there that he should get an opportunity to play with. He may even be able to see some power-play ice once he arrives there so this should be a nice deal for him as he looks to get paid after this season.
As for the Blackhawks, they are receiving Alex Regula from Detroit. He is a 19-year-old defenseman who was a third-round pick in the 2018 NHL Draft. He currently plays for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League. Maybe it is no coincidence that he spent the 2018-19 season with Blackhawks prospect Adam Boqvist. In 66 games last season, he tallied 11 goals and 28 assists for 39 points which is pretty good production for not being the go-to guy on a team. So far this year he is doing even better as he has four goals and seven assists for 11 points in ten games played so he is doing even better.
If Perlini wasn’t being used at all, it was a good idea to send him away to Detroit in exchange for a defenseman can bring something to the team. This is a solid trade for the Blackhawks and it could eventually end up working out for both teams. Regula appears to have an NHL ceiling and has some familiarity with someone in the organization.
