Worst performance #3: Entire Bears offensive line

At first, I was hoping the offensive line struggles for the Bears was just early season jitters. It seems the guys up front have issues that aren’t going away, and it’s making this offense fall apart.

The offensive line of the Bears made strides in the last couple of seasons to drastically improve. What was once considered a liability just three or four years ago was considered a strength going into the season.

But now, it seems as if some players on the Bears offensive line regressed from last season. Both tackles, Bobby Massie and Charles Leno Jr., are struggling to avoid penalties and prevent sacks. There’s little push in short-yardage situations.

The offensive line gave up four sacks on Sunday and Leno played into Trubisky’s fourth-quarter fumble when he was pushed into the quarterback.

Take the team’s drive before the half, when the Bears marched the ball down the field and had 1st and goal to go at the Chargers one-yard line.

With no timeouts, the team couldn’t just run three running plays to pound it in. However, there’s ways to try and run the ball in these situations.

The Bears supposedly have an offensive genius coach in Nagy, but he called a run straight up the middle on 2nd and goal with 25 seconds remaining. The offensive line has to come up big in these situations.

Instead, the Bears couldn’t gain one yard for the touchdown and had to settle for a 19-yard Pineiro field goal. the offense was rightfully booed off the field heading into the half.

If this team wants to have any shot at sneaking into the playoffs, the offensive line play has to improve. Their play is becoming one of the team’s biggest problems.
