Pedro Strop was one of the best bullpen arm acquisitions for the Chicago Cubs and the 34-year-old wants to return to the team next season.

When the Chicago Cubs acquired Pedro Strop back in July 2013 for both Steve Clevenger and Scott Feldman, Jake Arrieta ended up becoming the star of that particular trade. Strop takes a lot of flack for whatever reason. Maybe it’s the way he wears his hat but no matter which way it is slanted which is always to the left, Strop was one of the best relievers over the past 6+ seasons.

With 5 straight sub-3.00 ERA years, Strop cemented himself in Cub fans’ hearts. He had a rough go of it this season but also landed on the injured list a couple of times. Now a free agent, Strop has told the Cubs that he wants to return to the team next year.

"“I gotta say the Cubs are a priority [in free agency] and I’ll work with them first and see if we can work something out,” Strop said after the Cubs’ final game of the season. “If not, then Plan B — whatever is best for the rest of my career. Right now, I just want to come back and stay home.” – NBC Chicago"

Strop is 34-years-old and would likely get no more than a two-year deal. If you recall, Jesse Chavez said that he would only wear one uniform heading into last offseason before taking more money to return to the Texas Rangers. Look, I get it. It’s a business. And if we’re being honest, the Cubs may have dodged a bullet in Chavez who got shelled in 48 appearances with the Rangers last season.

That being said, Pedro Strop is still very capable of being a quality back end of the bullpen guy and the Cubs should absolutely try to work something out with him. After he returned from the injured list for the second time, Strop looked good as new as he posted a 2.00 ERA in 9.0 innings of work for the month of September. He also allowed opponents to hit just 0.103 off him.

When Strop is healthy, he is electric and he’s a positive influence in the clubhouse. The Cubs already need to overhaul their bullpen with several guys headed to free agency but could avoid having to replace one less player by re-signing Strop.
