Chicago Bears should not worry about Rams acquiring Jalen Ramsey

The Chicago Bears saw the reigning NFC champions make a big time move on Tuesday night.

As the Chicago Bears were in the midst of preparing for the New Orleans Saints this weekend, another NFC hopeful made a notable move. The Los Angeles Rams acquired cornerback Jalen Ramsey from the Jacksonville Jaguars for a pair of first round picks, along with a fourth rounder.

While we typically focus on the Bears, it makes sense to take a look at how this trade might impact the Bears down the road. The Rams sit at 3-3 and have some work to do, thus a splash like this might help propel them going forward.

The addition of Ramsey will bolster their pass defense, which is currently sitting in the middle of the pack at 14th in the NFL.

However, the Rams’ most glaring issue this year has not been on the defensive side of the ball.

Last year, these Rams were reminiscent of the “Greatest Show on Turf.” This year? Not so much. Todd Gurley has been banged up as of late, and even before his recent injury he has not looked the same. Many were worried about Gurley’s arthritic knee before the season began, and that worry has looked justified.

The Rams are currently ranked 22nd in the league in rushing, tallying 98.3 yards per game. Of those, Gurley is averaging 54.0 yards. Gurley’s yards per attempt is down do 4.2 this year, as opposed to 4.9 last season.

Let’s not forget, Jared Goff‘s play has been nearly unforgivable in 2019.

In six games, Goff has only thrown seven touchdowns — along with seven interceptions. Last season, Goff lost five fumbles all season. This year, he’s already lost four.

Some Bears fans sure love to poke fun at Goff’s struggles, pointing to last year’s matchup between the two teams as the game that “broke” the quarterback. Since that game, Goff truly has not looked the same — I can live with that explanation.

The Bears figured out the recipe to beat the Rams last season, and when they face off once again November 17, it could end up being the same story. Chicago’s offense doesn’t necessarily feature one lethal threat in the passing game, although Allen Robinson has been stellar this year. Robinson will likely draw Ramsey all game.

But, as we’ve seen, Taylor Gabriel is always a problem if given the targets. Just a few weeks ago, Gabriel caught three touchdowns in one half against the Washington Redskins. Furthermore, the Bears have plenty of weapons. It’ll be up to Matt Nagy to finally show off his offensive mind and get them the ball in creative ways.

Ramsey is the best corner in the game, and he’ll help Los Angeles. But, he doesn’t fix the rest of the Rams’ problems.
