Chicago Bears: Chris Long should stay out of Mitchell Trubisky debate
By Ryan Heckman
Chris Long certainly has his ties to the Chicago Bears with his brother Kyle Long, but is he right to speculate?
Look, the Chicago Bears are no where close to being in a perfect situation at the moment. Injuries have killed them this year with guys like Mitchell Trubisky and Akiem Hicks missing time. But, at 3-2 they have plenty of season left to get into a rhythm and make a playoff run.
After all, this is supposedly a Super Bowl defense, right? All the Bears need is for their offense to take some steps forward in order to change the public perception.
But, that might be easier said than done.
During Trubisky’s first few games this year, he’s looked almost like he took a step back from his solid 2018 season. Granted, he started slow last year, too. But, this is his third year in the league and second year in Matt Nagy’s offense. So, it’s now or never, right?
Last week, on the Ryen Russillo podcast, former NFL defensive end Chris Long was brought on and discussed his thoughts on the Bears’ quarterback situation.
"“…in the conversation of Chicago and what it means this year and beyond, in 2020, you’re letting Trubisky walk, right?”"
First off, let me say this as a Bears fan: By no means are all fans sold on Trubisky. Whether it’s the comparisons to Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson, and questioning why Trubisky was the pick, or based purely on his play thus far — I get it. Trubisky is not precisely what the Bears should have had with the no. 2 overall pick.
But, because he is tied to the Bears by his brother Kyle Long (who also happens to be going through a rough time at the moment), this guy needs to pipe down.
The Bears are already subject to plenty of national criticism regarding Trubisky. Long’s brother still plays for the Bears, and is still highly respected and loved by his teammates and the organization. This is not his place to try and stir things up.
Though he’s never been one to shy away from speaking his mind, [Chris] Long should sit this one out. He has to understand that his brother is facing his career dead in the eyes right now, due to health reasons, and support Kyle in that respect. The Bears have a full season ahead of them. Quarterback debate means nothing right now, anyway. Let’s come back to it around draft time — fair enough?
Leave the Trubisky debate alone and focus on your brother – period.
