Chicago Bears: 5 tight ends to consider in 2020
By Usayd Koshul
It’s never too late to start looking ahead in the NFL, so what are five tight ends the Chicago Bears should keep an eye on next offseason?
If one were to examine the state of the Chicago Bears roster, it’s clear that on the offensive side of the ball, there are two positions that need the most attention: Quarterback and tight end. Other than that, the Bears are set for at least the next two years at positions like wide receiver, running back, and on the offensive line.
At one point, tight end was viewed as a strength for the Bears due to the addition of Trey Burton and the upside of Adam Shaheen. However, Burton spent all offseason rehabbing from an injury while Shaheen has shown no flashes of being a true NFL tight end.
Currently, Adam Shaheen is under contract until the end of the 2020 season. Were the Bears to cut Shaheen, in 2020, he’d save them about $1.2 million dollars. Then there’s Trey Burton, who’s contract guarantees him at least two more years with the Bears. Now the problem with cutting Burton next offseason is that he won’t save the Bears much money. The only way to really save money would be by trading Burton, however, no team is likely going to want to take on a massive cap hit of $6.7 million dollars in 2020.
Essentially, the Bears tight end room is a bigger mess than most think. Talent hasn’t exactly panned out as hoped which means that the only way to truly get a fresh start at the position is through the 2020 NFL Draft.
While we don’t know who’s going to be drafted where what we can do is begin to at least look into potential tight ends that could declare for the 2020 NFL Draft. As of right now, this isn’t expected to be a very strong tight end class, however, there are some guys who could certainly draw some consideration as second-round picks.
With two second-round picks in 2020, what are five potential tight ends the Bears should be keeping an eye on? We’ll break each of them down and what each of the names mentioned could bring to the Bears offense.
