Chicago Bears, Matt Nagy starting 3-2 feels similar to 2018
By Ryan Fedrau
After Sunday’s loss to the Oakland Raiders, Matt Nagy and the Chicago Bears go into their bye week with a 3-2 record, the same record they had after five games last season.
The Chicago Bears’ season has started off to an interesting, but rocky start, especially on offense. The poor play on offense has turned fans against each other on if Mitchell Trubisky is the problem or if Matt Nagy and his play-calling is the problem. Fans haven’t taken the many drops by his wide receivers or an injured offensive line into factor during this argument. The argument people are missing is the weird coincidences from last season to this season after five games. Are they just coincidences are will history repeat itself this season?
Bears’ fans, hear me out before you call me crazy. Last season the Chicago Bears lost to the Green Bay Packers Week 1, 24-23 after blowing a 20-point lead in the second half. Once the offense stalled, they only scored three points against the Packers. The same amount of points they put up during the season opener against the Packers this season.
The offense stalled the whole game Week 1 this season, there was no 20-point lead, it was just a field goal and that was it. People might say that it is a stretch, but it seems more like a similarity than stretching it. Either way, that is a 0-1 start for the Bears, both times.
Week 2 against the Broncos, the Bears won the game on the leg of Eddy Pineiro, 16-14, the same score and finish to last season’s Week 3 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. In both games, the Bears scored a rushing touchdown, caused multiple defensive turnovers, and scored three field goals. It was just a week off. The only difference was Cody Parkey didn’t have to kick a game-winning field goal as Pineiro did, but the scoring summary for both games is very similar.
I know I skipped passed last season’s Week 2 game against the Seattle Seahawks but that is because they aren’t similar enough to any of the five games the Bears’ have played this season. The only similarity is a Week 2 win for the Bears, both seasons giving them a 1-1 record after two games.

Week 4 during the 2018 season was the week Mitchell Trubisky broke out and scored six passing touchdowns, after struggling during the first three games. Trubisky this season struggled through the first two games and lit up the Washington Redskins defense Week 3, passing for three touchdowns during the game. Three touchdowns aren’t six, but Trubisky started running the offense better after a 16-14 victory last season, just like this season. It wasn’t a week 4 though, it was Week 3 this time around. The weird coincidence of it being right after a 16-14 win is noteworthy.
Before getting to last Sunday’s game, which was very similar to the Week 6 matchup against the Miami Dolphins from last season, we must bring up the 16-6 win against the Minnesota Vikings Week 4. Trubisky got hurt during the home game against the Vikings last season where he dislocated his right shoulder and was out for two weeks. That is almost the same injury he has this season, with almost the exact recovery time.
Last Sunday against the Raiders was just like the Week 6 matchup against the Dolphins from last season. It was a game the Bears were favored to win but were in conditions the Bears weren’t prepared for. Last season, the temperature for the game was nearing the 100-degree mark. This season they played in London, a time-zone the Bears obviously were not prepared for. Both games were the Bears’ fifth game of the season and they lost by three points.
The Bears, just like last season, have started off 3-2. Yes, it could just be a coincidence but it seems just way too similar. There are so many similarities to the first five games, as I pointed out. I am fine with the Bears finishing out 12-4 and winning the NFC North again, I just hope they don’t lose the same exact weeks, including another heartbreaking playoff loss in the first round.
If the Bears lose to the New Orleans Saints, they are cursed by something. Hopefully, they can win against the Saints and end our suspicion. It seems a little bit too real, but then again, it could just be a coincidence that won’t end in a heartbreaking playoff loss in January.
