Chicago Bulls: Best, worse case scenarios for Kris Dunn in 2019-2020
Worst Possible Outcome
This is tough. I am not sure how Kris Dunn could have a worse outcome than the predicament he finds himself in currently. Many believe he is essentially out of a job and will see little to no minutes on the floor. This is not a good way to enter the fourth season of his career.
One possible way things could get worse would be a major injury. That said, I never like to predict injuries on anyone. Is it possible the Chicago Bulls decide to send him down into the G-League? That would be the absolute worst-case scenario outside of injury I could think of for Dunn.
The question is, would that even be likely? Shockingly, the answer is yes. The Bulls currently have six point guards on their roster. I would argue that Coby White and Tomas Satoransky are both locks to make the team. Dunn is likely the next most talented but is he worth holding onto if he only plays five to 10 minutes per night?
If the Bulls can find a trade partner, I think they will take almost anything for Dunn. He has not lived up to the hype of being a former fifth overall pick in the NBA Draft. However, maybe a team who feels weak at their backup point guard spot would be willing to trade a second-round pick for Dunn. Like I said though, finding a trade partner could be tough.
If the Bulls cannot trade him, Dunn would start on the roster. However, it is possible they sign him to a two-way contract. A two-way contract would mean Dunn would spend most of the 2019-2020 season with the Windy City Bulls and no more than 45 days with the Chicago Bulls.
This would be a big blow to Kris Dunn and his status within the NBA, but the G-League is turning into something better than what the D-League was in years past. Names like Eric Bledsoe and Rudy Gobert played in the G-League last season. It is not necessarily the end of a player’s career.
I honestly think Dunn lands somewhere in the middle of these two scenarios though. He will remain with the Bulls for most of the season and likely will be shipped off at some point depending on how the team performs.
