1965-73. 1. Scouting Report. LB. Dick Butkus. player. 57. Pick Analysis

The most feared linebacker in Bears’ history and one of the most feared defensive players in NFL history, Dick Butkus redefined the meaning of playing the linebacker position every time he stepped on the field for the Bears.

Over nine years that started in 1965 and ended in 1973, Butkus would represent the Bears in eight Pro Bowls and be named a First-Team All-Pro on six different occasions.

A Chicago native, there’s a story of how Butkus ended up on the Bears. In 1965, Butkus would be drafted by the Denver Broncos of the AFL, as well as being drafted by the Bears. Eventually, he’d decide to play for the Bears due to George Halas’ presence. The Bears were his hometown team after all.

As if Butkus’ resume isn’t already impressive enough, he would be voted as NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice in back-to-back seasons.

To top it all off, Butkus is one of five Bears players to be named to the NFL’s 75th All-Time Anniversary Team.

It is, however, unfortunate that Butkus’ career would end at the age of 31 due to a knee injury that had bothered him for years.

Had he stayed healthy, Butkus would have likely continued to play at a high level even into his late 30s and accomplish enough to be considered as perhaps the greatest defensive player in NFL history.

Walk today along the streets of Chicago and at least one person will be seen wearing a Bears jersey that has No. 51 on the front and back. Even after his playing days, Butkus is a fan favorite in Chicago for those fans who were able to watch him during his time.
