There haven’t been many reasons to be encouraged by Chicago Bears quarterback Mitchell Trubisky’s play but one area could be cause for hope.

If you are a Chicago Bears fan, these past two weeks have been absolutely excruciating. If you listen to sports talk radio and are active on Twitter, it has been even worse. You’ve had to endure endless discussions and tweets about Mitchell Trubisky.

You’ve probably heard and read things like “Trubisky is a bust” or “what if the Bears drafted Patrick Mahomes.” You may also have seen some asking whether the Bears should make a run at Eli Manning or Colin Kaepernick this year, or try to sign Teddy Bridgewater in the offseason.

These are incredibly difficult things to read if you are a fan of the Bears. Now imagine if they were written about you! Imagine if someone followed you around work all day and then blasted your performance to everyone who would listen? Now yes, it does come with the territory of being a professional athlete, but it doesn’t make it any easier to take.

However, Trubisky is doing a phenomenal job handling all the negativity and criticism. Some want to question whether he is losing confidence while others cite his body language looking for clues about the degree to which he believes in himself.

But Trubisky does not appear to be shaken at all.

In his press conference on Thursday, Trubisky appeared confident and resilient, stating that he still has confidence in himself and that the team still believes in him. He also is optimistic that the offense will breakout as talented as they are.

Whatever you want to say about his play thus far, you cannot knock the way in which he has handled the situation. In his press conference on Thursday, Matt Nagy talked about these tough times “mentally callousing” the team. There is a lot of truth to that. Having to grind out a win when you’re not playing your best football could serve the team well later in the year.

But it can also help a young quarterback teetering on the edge maintain hope. While fans’ confidence in Mitch may be waning, Mitch’s confidence in himself is still high. For his sake, I’d love to see him have a good game against the Washington Redskins, get back his swagger, and have the fans faith in him restored. He deserves a win.
