No regression here

One of the silliest narratives this offseason was that the Bears’ defense was going to surely regress. Of course, it is unlikely they will replicate the same number of turnovers as they did last season, but a defense can still be dominant without recording 30+ takeaways.

They showed that last night as the defense was remarkable — picking up right where they left off last season. They consistently brought pressure, sacking quarterback Aaron Rodgers five times. They flustered and flummoxed the future Hall of Famer, and absent a couple of plays in which he took advantage of Khalil Mack and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix being out, they relinquished nothing to the Packers’ offense.

The unit surrendered only 10 points and absent those two aforementioned plays, the Packers offense did absolutely nothing. In an absolutely disastrous game for the Bears, one of the very few positives to take away from last night was the performance of the defense. It does not appear they will have any difficulty with the transition to Chuck Pagano nor will they regress like many pundits think they will.

One thing to keep an eye on is how long the defense can sustain this type of success. Without the offense taking some of the pressure off of them, they will eventually tire and falter. They need to offense to carry their weight and if they don’t, things could get ugly in the Windy City.
