Chicago Bears: 53-man roster brings intrigue, questions
By Ryan Heckman
Question Marks
The two biggest surprises left off the roster have to be former Notre Dame standout offensive lineman Alex Bars and veteran journeyman linebacker James Vaughters. Both of these guys stood out during the preseason.
Bars seemed like a lock, considering the lack of depth at tackle. His connection to offensive line coach Harry Hiestand makes the cut intriguing, but the Bears have to be hoping he clears waivers and ends up on their practice squad.
Vaughters did nothing but disrupt opposing passers all preseason long, forcing turnovers and racking up sacks. Like Bars, the team has to hope he makes it through waivers — the depth at outside linebacker is also concerning.
One other player which fans fell in love with over the preseason was former Princeton tight end Jesper Horsted, an undrafted free agent. The Bears’ tight end position is anything but deep, and Horsted was one of the brightest stars of the preseason. Obviously, he showed out against backups and third stringers — but, he was one of the best players on the field while out there.
As we speak, we’re all waiting to see if these three clear waivers and end back with the Bears on their 2019 practice squad. Hopefully, that’s the case. But, I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see them swooped up.
