Chicago Sports: 5 most bizarre storylines in recent history
Jersey Sale
The Chicago White Sox once upon a time had one of the three best pitchers in all of baseball. Chris Sale was dominant for the White Sox and for the time he was there, was one of the best pitchers in team history. The only issue is that during the prime of his career, the White Sox were unable to provide him with a team to maximize his talent. The frustration came to a point during the 2016 White Sox season.
On July 23rd, 2016, Sale provided the White Sox with one of the weirdest storylines in team history. The Sox were set to wear throwback jerseys in the game and Sale was scheduled to start. He hated the jerseys because they were baggy and apparently messed with his pitching mechanics. He cut up all of the jerseys with scissors while the rest of the team was practicing on the field. The White Sox scratched Sale from the start and suspended him for five days. They didn’t trade him at that deadline but it felt like that was the beginning of the end.
They ended up trading him to the Boston Red Sox on December 6th, 2016 for Yoan Moncada and Michael Kopech. It was certainly one of the weirdest storylines in not only White Sox history, but Chicago history in general. It was an embarrassing time to be a White Sox fan, to be honest. You never see things like this and it just had to happen to our team.
