Chicago Blackhawks: A look at the top 5 prospects headed into 2019-20
The Chicago Blackhawks went from one of the lower-level farm systems in the NHL to a much better one over the last few years thanks to good development.
The Chicago Blackhawks are a few years removed from their greatest stretch in team history. They won the Stanley Cup three times in a span of six seasons and had multiple other deep playoff runs. They were the best team of the 2010s and had their on-ice production was pretty much second to none.
They had superstars like Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, Duncan Keith, and Brent Seabrook. Their depth was strong with guys like Patrick Sharp, Nicklas Hjalmarsson, and Johnny Oduya. To accompany all of that, some solid trades were made for guys like Michal Handzus, Antoine Vermette, and re-acquiring Andrew Ladd. Some of those trades left the organizational draft and prospect capital dry.
Because of that, the farm system was suffering for a while. It was okay because they were in win-now mode, but after the winning at the NHL level stopped they knew they needed to replenish the organizational depth. They have done that over the last few seasons and now they sit with a pretty good farm system.
Every team has a few high-end prospects and the Blackhawks are no different. This is a list of their top five overall prospects. They traded one of the top prospects in Henri Jokiharju for Alexander Nylander over the offseason which was a really questionable trade because Jokiharju would have been on this list, but Nylander is not. The top two might be easy to guess, but this team might need these five guys to contribute sooner than later.
