Chicago Bears: Trusting Matt Nagy’s decision to rest players
The Chicago Bears are expected to be a good team in 2019, and people should respect the decision of the reigning coach of the year.
The Chicago Bears project to be a pretty good team in 2019. They have a tough schedule but most believe they will be right there for the NFC North Division crown at the end of the season. Obviously, anything can happen in football but their roster is strong and they can build on what was a really good 2018 season.
2018 started with head coach Matt Nagy taking some criticism for resting his players for most of the preseason. All of that criticism was silenced when they came out of the gate strong and eventually a 12-4 record. Well, something similar appears to be brewing here in 2019. There are reports that all of the starters will be rested during their third preseason game against the Indianapolis Colts. The third preseason game is usually the dress rehearsal for the season, but the Bears won’t resemble their week 1 roster in this one.
This is a decision that Bears fans should be backing their coach on. Matt Nagy is the reigning coach of the year and has established himself as a good head coach in just one year. If Nagy doesn’t want to start his best players in meaningless preseason games, he doesn’t have to. Although it would make it more fun for us as fans, it doesn’t matter. It will be more fun to have everyone healthy and ready to come to go when the Green Bay Packers come to Soldier Field in week 1.
It is good that Nagy doesn’t care what anyone else outside the organization thinks and he is going to do what he feels is best for his football team. At the end of the day, the most important thing is winning the games that matter and as long as they continue to do that nobody should have anything negative to say about his preseason decisions.
There is a better chance that guys like Mitchell Trubisky, Khalil Mack, and Eddie Jackson amongst other stars on the team will be at full health when the regular season comes around. This is a team that should have Super Bowl aspirations, so digging deep in the preseason is not something to do in this case. Yeah, it would be nice to see Mitch get some reps against a real defense of an opposing team but the coach sees it differently and that is okay.
