When you think of the Bears throughout the 1980s, typically you think back to those monstrous defenses they put together year after year. The year 1985 is spoken, and a Bears fan automatically thinks “Super Bowl,” followed by names like Walter Payton, William Perry, Dan Hampton, Richard Dent — the list goes on.

The Bears wouldn’t have gone as far as they did in 1985 had it not been for Payton, of course, but other guys helped the offense along the way. Matt Suhey was one of them. A few have played next to Payton, and quite honestly, most looked pretty good. It was probably a difficult task to try to carve out a role next to a guy like that, but Suhey was able to do it.

That role, however, was not always running the ball.k Suhey was known for his elite blocking ability, paving the way for his buddy Payton to be the star. He was one of the main reasons Payton was able to do what he did consistently in the ground game. Fullbacks aren’t used quite as often anymore, but Suhey was one of the best at the original role.

Playing both the fullback and running back positions, Suhey comes in at No. 11 on the Bears all-time rushing list, despite never being the featured guy for Chicago. Over his Bears career, he rushed for 2,946 yards and 20 touchdowns — not too shabby for being known as more of a blocker than anything else, right?
