Chicago Cubs: Team’s 2020 April schedule looks brutal, cold
By Ryan Sikes
The Chicago Cubs 2020 schedule has been released and with exception to the opening series in Milwaukee, April is going to be a cold month.
For the fifth straight year, the Chicago Cubs will open their season on the road on March 26, 2020, in Milwaukee. You have to go all the way back to Sunday Night Baseball in 2015 when newly signed Jon Lester took the mound to kick off the Cubs 2015 season at home, under the lights against the St. Louis Cardinals. Something seems off with the fact that they haven’t had a home opener since then, but that’s an entirely different discussion.
After a short three-game series in Milwaukee, the Cubs will have their home opener on Monday, March 30 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The season is starting earlier in 2020 to accommodate the Cubs/Cardinals two-game series in London in which the Cubs will have Thursday and Friday off before playing Saturday and Sunday and then having Monday off as well.
However, if they can somehow survive their April schedule in good standing, then jetlag should be a cakewalk. The Milwaukee series is the only game played in a temperature-controlled environment, otherwise, they have home series against the Pirates, Diamondbacks, Cardinals, Pirates, Phillies, and Pirates again.
Their road schedule is equally as cold as they’ll travel to Pittsburgh for a four-game series, Baltimore for two and Washington for four. Their entire April is going to be played in cold weather environments. This will be even more challenging for guys like Anthony Rizzo and Kyle Hendricks who are naturally slow starters.
As for the rest of the schedule, the Cubs will welcome in American League East opponents in the Baltimore Orioles (June 2-3), Boston Red Sox (June 19-21), and Tampa Bay (July 3-5). They will be traveling to Baltimore (April 14-15), New York Yankees (June 26-28), and the Toronto Blue Jays (August 14-16).
The Crosstown Classic will also be held in the same month in 2020 with two games at Guaranteed Rate (July 7-8) before picking up the series again at Wrigley (July 20-21). The good news is that the Cubs will finish their final 10-of-12 games at home should it be a tight division race.
Which series are you most looking forward to?
