Look Ma – No Hands

Have I told you how much I love DVR? The feature allows me to go back and watch plays over and over again. I can pick out multiple players on the same play to watch and analyze. However, watching a game live, in real speed is also important. If you see a player stand out, it usually means he did something really well or made a horrible play.

These guys not only made great plays, but they were also consistently making good plays throughout the game.

David Montgomery – RB

The obvious answer here is David Montgomery. He showed up last night in every way and should have put a stop to any of his detractors. He proved why the Chicago Bears moved on from Jordan Howard and showed the difference between having a good running back and a potential superstar.

Montgomery showed his versatility out of the backfield. His touchdown run was a thing of beauty. He bounced an inside handoff to the outside because of his vision to make plays happen. He caught a few balls out of the backfield showing his hands too.

After a holding penalty negated a decent run and pushed the Bears back, he caught a screen pass for 20-plus yards and a first down. It was his stutter-step at the end of the run though that allowed him to gain another five yards on the pursuing defender. These plays are why Montgomery will be the lead back of the Chicago Bears.

Deon Bush – S

We were able to see some of Deon Bush last season after Eddie Jackson was hurt late in the season. Bush was serviceable in those games, but last night Bush stood out to me. He has been talked up during training camp. He was able to see additional reps while Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was on the PUP list. Those reps seem to be paying off.

Although he did not show up on the stat sheet with more than two tackles, Bush was making plays. He had an excellent pass defended in the first quarter. He also caught his first interception. Despite being a reserve player in this defense, his stock is definitely rising during the final year of his contract.

Josh Woods – ILB

The Bears inside linebacker depth could prove to be important this season. Josh Woods was making his presence known. Woods finished with five tackles and a forced fumble that led to a touchdown. He showed his speed and athleticism by stopping what could have been a big play on a pass in the flat to Reggie Bonnafon. He even showed up often on special teams.

Woods is a lock to make this team.

Notables

  • Ian Bunting, TE – Inconsistent night. Poor blocking and a fumble, but stood out receiving.
  • John Franklin, CB – Nice coverage and made some sure tackles.
  • Kevin Pierre-Louis, ILB – Was making flashes in the backfield with pressure and tackles.
  • Nick Williams, DT – Proving to be a solid backup for Eddie Goldman.
  • Roy Robertson-Harris, DE – Nice sack and continues to show why he deserves snaps.
  • Elliott Fry, K – Was perfect on the night.
