Chicago Bears: David Montgomery proved his worth against Panthers
By Ryan Sikes
David Montgomery provided a glimpse for Chicago Bears fans why the team was so high on him coming out of college. He shined against the Panthers.
The Chicago Bears running back situation over the offseason went on without a resolution for quite some time, often nauseating at times. It was believed that head coach Matt Nagy wanted a running back that fit his offensive scheme. Jordan Howard tried his best to become the pass catcher they wanted him to be, but it just wasn’t a natural fit.
He was eventually traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for a 2020 sixth-round pick with the potential to move up to a fifth-round pick. The team was proactive in signing Mike Davis who showed flashes in both San Francisco and Seattle but left fans wondering if he was essentially just Howard all over again.
Turns out, the front office still had plans to draft a natural pass catcher at the running back position and took David Montgomery from Iowa State in the third round in April’s draft. Montgomery has looked excellent in training camp thus far and finally got to display his skillset in last night’s game against the Panthers.
I should preface this that while I do realize it’s just a preseason game, Montgomery is going to do everything he can to prove to the front office why he was a great selection in the third round. Heck, he might even have a chip on his shoulder for falling past the second round. Whatever the case, he was fantastic in the Bears first preseason game.
Montgomery had just 3 carries but he rattled off 16 yards, including this 7-yard scamper into the endzone to get the Bears on the board. As previously noted, they drafted him for his natural receiving ability as well and he hauled in 3 catches for 30 yards last night.
Mike Davis had just 3 carries for 9 yards. Again, not too much stock can be put into preseason performance but the fact that Montgomery put on a show in limited action is extremely encouraging for Bears fans and the front office. The Bears will face the New York Giants a week from today and we should get a much larger sample size from the Iowa State product.
