Chicago Bears: 3 takeaways from first unofficial depth chart of 2019
By Ryan Sikes
McManis is listed with the third-string safeties. Is his time in Chicago almost up?
Sherrick McManis has been with the Chicago Bears since 2012 and has only started 5 games in 7 seasons. He’s seen time in almost every game and did a nice job playing a larger role when Eddie Jackson went down with the ankle injury against the Packers that forced him to miss the rest of the season, including the postseason game.
McManis arguably had his best season in a Bears uniform in 2018, recording 26 total tackles, 4 pass deflections, and 1 sack. That being said, he is buried in the depth chart to start the year. Obviously the starting safeties are going to be Eddie Jackson and Ha Ha Clinton-Dix but I would have expected McManis to be with the second string along with Deon Bush.
It’s pretty telling for McManis’ future with the Bears that he’s listed with the third team and DeAndre Houston-Carson is ahead of him. DHC put up modest numbers last season playing in 13 games while recording 10 total tackles and 1 fumble recovery.
He’s obviously had the better training camp thus far and McManis will need to take advantage of Thursday’s playing time to re-establish himself as being worthy of a roster spot in 2019.
