Chicago Bears: Way-too-early 2020 offseason preview

3. Veteran extensions
The Bears may want to keep around some veteran players that have been major contributors to the team over the last few years. One name that comes to mind is Inside Linebacker Danny Trevathan. Sometimes referred to as the “quarterback” of the defense, Trevathan is one of the underrated defensive players in the NFL.
When the Bears signed Trevathan to a four-year back in the 2016 offseason, it was looked at as being one of the best free-agent signings of the offseason. Since then, Trevathan has been a leader and a force on the Bears defense.
As he heads into his ninth NFL season, Trevathan is coming off a year that saw him produce heavily. In 2018, he totaled 102 tackles and eight tackles for loss all while playing next to Khalil Mack and Akiem Hicks.
On one hand, it’s very likely that 2019 could be Trevathan’s final season with the Bears. If the Bears are set to lock up core players then it could come at the expense of Trevathan. However, the Bears and Trevathan could also work towards a reunion, which means that the two sides could agree to a that would keep Trevathan in Chicago until at least 2023.
As of right now, Trevathan is the only major veteran on the roster the Bears would consider extending. Guys like Charles Leno Jr., Bobby Massie, and Akiem Hicks are locked up for at least the next three years.
