Yo Cubs Yo

This made me look at some more advanced statistics. BABIP measures how often a ball in play goes for a hit. The Cubs are currently 13th in the league with a .298. This is down from 2018 when the team had a .312 BABIP. The difference here is not huge, but it could mean the team will see a slight positive regression in offense before the season ends. This is important as the team makes a playoff push.

The final number I looked at was the Cubs ISO. ISO is directly related to power. Since the Cubs have more HR this season compared to last, it is likely that the team’s ISO would be higher. Doubles and triples are a part of measuring ISO though too, meaning it was not a guarantee the ISO would be better this year. Now that I strung you along, the Cubs 2019 ISO is up 0.048 from 2018.

light. Trending. Chicago Bears: Are they building a dynasty?

With most hitting categories in the top 10 this season, why all of the whining about the Cubs season? Well, the big difference in being top 10 in most hitting categories and the Cubs not dominating this year is the fact they are 22nd in situational hitting with runners in scoring position. Ouch. This is likely why they score 11 runs one game and only one or two the next.

Fun fact though, at .254, the team is hitting better situationally with runners in scoring position than they did in 2016 (.252) when they won the World Series. The Cubs’ bullpen has to be a much bigger issue, right?
