Around the city of Chicago, many people are either Chicago Cubs fans or Chicago White Sox fans. Most fans despise the other crosstown team. This is the opinion of one White Sox fan who has no bias or hatred towards the Cubs.

If you rewind back to the year 2016, you can actually find photographs of me in a Chicago Cubs shirt as the team pushed through the postseason to win the World Series. I must disclose that I wore Cubs gear not because I lost a bet. I also did not wear Cubs gear because I was a bandwagon fan. In fact, I lost a friend that October who was one of the biggest Cubs fans you will ever know.

I wore a Cubs shirt to a work function that supported the team as they made their way through the playoffs. Wearing Cubs gear was not a requirement for this function. In fact, you were encouraged to wear your favorite baseball team’s gear. With everything that happened that October, I had to borrow a Cubs shirt and wear it in our friend’s honor.

For those few weeks in the fall of 2016, I was a Cubs fan through and through. I watched almost every playoff game. I stayed up late during the World Series. I even let out an enthusiastic yell when the team clinched the World Series in Game 7.

I will admit, it was easy to cheer against the Cleveland Indians. As a resident of the Chicago suburbs and someone who works in the South Loop, why would I cheer for a White Sox divisional rival over a team based in my own backyard? Why would I not want to see the Cubs win for the loss of a friend who was watching from up above?

Now that you have a background of where I am coming from, hopefully, you will believe me when I say, I am not biased towards the Chicago Cubs. I do not watch them play often, but when I do I am cheering them on. Backup. I cheer them on whenever they are not playing the White Sox.

Pointing out that I do not have a rooting interest for the team either is important too. This allows me to give an unbiased opinion of where the team is at currently and where they may be headed in the future. Why is this important? Most fans are either overly optimistic about their teams or they tend to be overly pessimistic about their teams. My stance on the Cubs allows me to be neutral.
