Chicago Bears: 4 players to trade before roster cuts
By Ryan Heckman
Wide Receiver Taylor Gabriel
Let me start by saying I would prefer the Bears keep Taylor Gabriel. But, there is definitely a case to be made why trading him would make sense.
The first reason the Bears could opt to trade him is to save some cash. Gabriel’s contract will pay him $6.5 million this year and $6.5 million next year, followed by $7.5 million in the fourth and final year of his deal.
With this position being so deep, trading Gabriel would open up some cap space going into next year. The Bears have several players who will need new deals in the coming years — Eddie Jackson, Mitchell Trubisky to name a couple.
Thus far, Javon Wims is impressing throughout training camp and is proving he deserves a role in this offense. His spot on the roster was never really in question, but one guy who could step in and offer the Bears some speed like Gabriel possesses is Marvin Hall.
Hall is another guy who has made some eye-opening plays at camp so far, but unless something crazy happens, he won’t make this team. Anthony Miller and Riley Ridley are guaranteed locks, of course. Cordarrelle Patterson is a lock, as well.
Hypothetically, if the Bears could return something like a fifth round pick for Gabriel, I would bet Pace entertains that idea.
