Chicago Bears: 4 players to trade before roster cuts
By Ryan Heckman
Cornerback Sherrick McManis
It has been seven solid years for Sherrick McManis in a Bears uniform, but that time could be coming to an end this year. McManis has been a steady contributor for a while now, and has been comfortable and productive in his role during that time. But, the fact that Chicago is getting deeper and deeper at cornerback could mean his roster spot is up for grabs.
Last year, when Bryce Callahan went down with an injury, McManis stepped right in and the defense never missed a beat. That speaks volumes about the guys surrounding him, but also shows that he can still play. He may not be a standout athlete at this point in his career, but McManis is still a smart player.
With Buster Skrine coming in as the new starter and the Bears drafting Duke Shelley, McManis may not have a place on this team for very long. Even looking at outside depth, I believe it’ll be Kevin Toliver and Stephen Denmark who come away with jobs behind Kyle Fuller and Prince Amukamara.
What kind of return could there be for McManis? Well, at this stage of his career, the answer is probably not much. If anything, Chicago could look at potentially gaining a seventh-round pick if another team is willing.
