Chicago Bears: Predictions for David Montgomery in 2019
By Usayd Koshul
2. By week five, Montgomery will be the Bears lead running back
The Bears clearly believe in what David Montgomery can do. Through the first five games of the season, the Bears will play the Packers, Broncos, Redskins, Vikings, and Raiders. This means that by the time the Bears get ready to play the Raiders in London, Montgomery has a chance to be the lead running back.
One thing to understand here is that even if Montgomery doesn’t start week five, it’s very likely that come week seven against the Saints, the Bears decide to roll with Montgomery. The significance of this is that since the Bears will be coming off their bye week, Montgomery would have a full two weeks to get fully acclimated with the Bears playbook and also know what to expect in his first start.
Before giving him the starting job, it’s likely that the Bears go ahead and only put Montgomery in during special situations. This allows for the Bears to see where he’s at in terms of playing at an NFL caliber speed. It’s one thing to impress in practice, but it’s a totally different thing to be in a game against other professional players. If Montgomery can impress in situational play, then he should take over the Bears starting job quickly.
