Chicago Bears: Predictions for David Montgomery in 2019
By Usayd Koshul
1. Montgomery will lead the Bears in rushing yards
Despite the fact that the Bears claim that the team will be using a running back by committee approach, David Montgomery should end up leading the Bears in rushing yards due to his all-around skill set.
One of the major things to note about Montgomery is that while he isn’t overly explosive, he is dangerous once he gets into open space. Additionally, he’s proven that because he’s got excellent contact balance, it’s hard to knock him off his feet.
As of right now, it appears that Mike Davis will be the week one starter for the Bears. However, if Montgomery can prove throughout the course of the preseason that he understands more and more of the Bears offense, he could end up being the team’s number one running back.
Since running backs are used so heavily in Matt Nagy’s system, it’s fair to expect the Bears to dial-up a number of different formations that will allow for Montgomery’s talent to be utilized to the fullest extent.
It’s very tough to predict Montgomery’s stat-line at this point. However, he could very easily end up getting about 1000 rushing yards. This is one of those things that if he does end up taking away reps from Mike Davis, then he could very well be the NFL’s leading rusher as a rookie.
